What Led to Alliston Murder?

UPDATE: Teenaged murder suspect in bail court

Case delayed until July 3 so Alliston girl can apply for Legal Aid
By TRACY MCLAUGHLIN, Special to the Examiner, June 25 2012

“A 17-year-old Alliston girl charged with murder made a brief appearance in bail court on Monday.

Wearing handcuffs and dressed in jail-issued blue T-shirt and jeans, the girl sat calmly in the glassed-in prisoner’s box with no show of emotion.

She is charged with the second-degree murder of 24-year-old Steven Garnier of Alliston, who was allegedly stabbed just before midnight during a small house gathering in Alliston, Saturday night.

Garnier was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

“Do you understand the charges against you?” asked the justice of the peace.

“Yes,” she answered in a straightforward tone.

In court, her father sat alone and looked on in silence.

There is a ban on the identity of the teen under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. There is also a ban on any of the details of the evidence heard in court.

The case was delayed to July 3 to give the teen time to apply for Legal Aid.

However, she will not be able to get out on bail until she has a hearing in a higher court. Until then, she will be held in custody at a maximum security centre for youth.

Police are still investigating.

“At this point the crime unit has the body in post-mortem and once they’re completed and the coroner releases the scene then I can release the (man’s) name,” OPP Const. Kelly Daniels-Griffis said, Monday. “I can’t indicate who lives at the residence.”

A post-mortem examination of the man’s body was scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Monday, but Daniels-Griffis said investigators aren’t releasing much information about what happened.”
